What Are Tactile Indicators?

Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) are textured surface features installed in pedestrian areas to provide tactile and visual cues for people with vision impairment. They use raised studs (hazard/warning indicators) and directional bars (directional indicators) to communicate changes in surface level, approaching hazards, and safe navigation pathways through the built environment.

Types of Silver Tactile Indicators

Hazard Tactile Indicators

Featuring raised dome-shaped studs in a regular pattern, hazard tactile indicators warn of upcoming changes in level such as stairs, ramps, escalators, and platform edges. They are installed approximately 300mm from the hazard in accordance with AS/NZS 1428.4.1.

Directional Tactile Indicators

Featuring raised elongated bars aligned in the direction of travel, directional tactile indicators guide pedestrians along safe pathways, particularly in open areas where orientation may be difficult.
